Description – This project involved the creation of a new means of escape for the palliative care ward. This was desperately needed to allow patients located in this ward to go outside and improve quality towards the end of their life.

We were tasked with removing existing windows and then making the necessary structural alterations to allow for the installation of new door and window unit. The external landscaping was also altered to allow for easier access for beds to be taken out during the day. These works included altering all of the levels and ensuring a suitable solution for drainage had been installed. This area was then tarmacked for ease of mobility once out of the ward.

Once the door and window unit had been installed the internal works were carried out, the flooring was infilled and the walls were plaster patch repaired and decorated to match existing.

The project held numerous difficulties in terms of working around live environments that took a lot of care and attention given the situation regarding patient occupation and other estates works on going. Just as the project was due to commence all works were halted due to COVID-19 preparation across the entirety of the NHS estate. As precautions began to ease we were able to get back on to site and resume works that had previously been left. A new working method had to be sought and introduced to comply with COVID-19 restrictions, this was embraced by MBC and we were able to quickly and carefully resume works at Ripon Community Hospital.
