Description – The project comprised of the installation of a new liquid nitrogen storage vessel and the removal of the existing liquid nitrogen system. The works started by excavating to 2.4m, various underground services were discovered which incorporated adjustments to the design of the concrete slab. The ground was compressive tested which came out at 7% displacement over a 300mm area with 10 tons of pressure. Once excavated the ground was blinding and the installation of Filcore FM 500 which is a rigid but compressible block. These had to be used to reduce the ground pressure on a newly installed steam main. The slab was installed with a cantilevered edge due to existing services. Throughout the project MBC was in direct access with the building users within the loading area, this was due to between 12 and 1pm the loading area was off limits. Within that hour the chemistry building moves the hazardous chemicals from within the building to the adjacent stores. Alongside this the loading bay had to be accessible by large wagons for deliveries. Opposite the excavation is the Zochonis building which has operational sleeper laboratories which mean we had noise and time constraints when working out of hours. MBC adjusted and accommodated to incorporate everything the building users requested. The construction of the walling and fencing around the slab to protect the public and equipment being installed. The Liquid Nitrogen tank was installed with the use of multiple crane to lift the 17 ton tank into place. The cranes were also user to install the 4 m tall condensing unit. MBC had to work to strict deadlines as the existing tank was in disrepair.
